About this app

We are currently advising customers of their new tax codes for the new tax year. Use this app to check your code and update next year’s estimated pay if needed.

The HMRC app is also a handy way to:

- check your pay a few days before pay day
- check previous payments from your employer
- find out how much Income Tax you should pay
- check your company benefits
- find your tax codes
- claim a refund if you’ve paid too much tax
- work out your take-home pay with the tax calculator
- set reminders for your Self Assessment payments
- check and save your National Insurance number
- manage and renew your tax credits
- access your Help to Save account
- check your Child Benefit
- check your State Pension
- check progress on forms you’ve sent to HMRC
- read messages from HMRC
- update your postal address
- choose to be contacted by HMRC electronically, instead of by letter

You can use your Government Gateway account to sign in. If you don’t have one, registration is easy and fast. You will need your National Insurance number and birth date to start.

Once you’re set-up, you can sign in quickly and securely using your face, fingerprint, or iris (depending on device support).

Login has convoluted forgettable Gateway code. I had screen spotted mine (a security risk, I know, but I would never remember it) but then lost my phone. No photo recognition of docs requested so have to type in long numbers. Requires phone signal to receive code (no email option) & I live in a data shadow. I am fully expecting to have to re-enter all my numbers again when I have got dressed and walked up the hill to receive my text message.

Hi Janet you only need to sign in once with your Gateway User ID to connect your tax account to the app and then you can access your account using your biometrics. If you use the app as an authenticator for HMRC's websites you can get the access code with a WIFI connection.

The app is actually quite helpful once you get your head around government websites. However, it it is still no help in contacting HMRC. That is still a nightmare, webchat is currently unavailable due to "technical difficulties". Phones don't get picked up at all, there's no queuing system or callback available. You get the impression they don't want to speak to the taxpayer.

Hi thanks for the review. We'll continue to improve the app to give you the information you need at a glance but we're also exploring ways of using the app to message HMRC where appropriate.

Original issue seems to have resolved itself however I can't increase the score that much. An app where buttons open a web browser is a waste of storage space (6 of 9 work in app). I downloaded an app to have everything centrally and not have to navigate the website. Useful for finding my national insurance number, but now that I've added it to Google wallet, I no longer see the point in keeping the app.
